Ben and Jerry's and Midnight Snacks...

Pathetic. There is Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream front and center. I am not tempted by the Italian Ice or Frozen Yogurt, just the Ice Cream. This must be one of temptations that is "common to man" (or at least woman). I have a real problem with ice cream, chocolate ice cream in particular. Especially late at night. It all started when I couldn't get to sleep (again). Maybe too much coffee? If I want to develop a healthy lifestyle, I need to cut out some of that too. Too much caffeine. Ouch. More painful than nixxing the ice cream. And it continued when I had to go potty (because I have been faithful drinking lots of water). Well, the girls were sleeping downstairs and the TV was still on, so I went down to piddle and turn off the TV, and well, the freezer just acted like a magnet. The ice cream practically jumped out of the freezer and into my hands. The spoon was even there.

So I didn't just slam the freezer door, I went right ahead and my "one little taste" turned into at least a serving, and since this flavor is "Everything But the Kitchen Sink" it has over 300 calories a serving. Sitting right there next to all those healthy veggies...

I was tempted beyond what I could bear, and I suppose the way out was not to buy it in the first place. I knew I couldn't resist...but it was at the Surplus Outlet for only $1.50 pint. Less than half price! Better than when we lived in Vermont years ago and could get it cheap cheap at the store (they sold factory seconds because there was too much air whipped in...).

I was smarter the last time. I satisfied my bargain shopper by buying it and then I left it all in Chris' freezer.

Contrary to what I may want to believe, chocolate is not a food group and fat laden ice cream is not an appropriate source of calcium. I am taking the rest to Chris' today, and putting the broccoli front and center. I doubt I will bother with that at 11:30 at night.

A friend of mine wrote this in her blog. I thought it might help..perhaps you could paste it ont he freezer?

And of course, you would have to change it to fit YOU....

As I began eating again, I posted a note on my refrigerator. Since my appetite (and stomach capacity) had shrunk, I wanted to take advantage of that and eat less long-term. Here's how I encouraged myself:

KATHY
Eating: will not relieve pain
will not make you feel better
will not solve loneliness
will not give you purpose
will not give you long term pleasure
will not help you with your issues
is too often just a pacifier!
Feel a need?
get a warm drink
get a cold drink
take a walk
pray

Hey, here's a suggestion: You can wait until you are 53 and become lactose intolerant--that works! Ask me how I know? It's great...I haven't had ice cream in ages. Fortunately, it was never one of my vices. But cheesecake, key lime pie, or any version of the above is my weakness (and no problems afterwards!). Tonight my hubby took me out to dinner (which for us consists of sharing an appetitzer--real lump crab dip--and dessert). We split both of them and we were still stuffed! I think today's portions are larger or my stomach got smaller.

Oh, and when the kiddos go away to college (for good!), and there's just the two of you AGAIN. The cupboards will be as bare as the refrigerator. Right now, ours has six bottles of water, half a stick of butter, two peaches, four apples, and NO KITCHEN SINK!

HUGS!

Hey Kathy,

Here's another one -- I am trying to really consider what I put in my mouth and if I don't really LOVE it I am not going to waste my intake on it. So a Godiva chocolate truffle is WAY better and more satisfying than an entire bar of supermarket chocolate. And just one satisfies me. And a few bites of my friend's incredibly good but tremendously fattening dessert was very satisfying. I didn't need to finish it. We feel the same way about peaches and probably store bought tomatoes (first one, worth it, second one, not). Steak from the BBQ, worth it, frozen hamburger patties, not. Two cups of green beans WITH butter, worth it, 1/2 c. of same beans with no butter, not. I simply cannot cut out entire categories of food. Anything forbidden becomes immediately desirable (hum, that sounds awfully familiar....). Overall, I am finding I make better choices and can make lifelong lifestyle changes. Oh, big news: I have now lost my first 10 lbs!!!!! And, today, I went biking for the first time in years. I am going for a bit of cross-training and want to bike on the days I don't do my Bowflex. The 2 plus mile ride nearly killed me and I had to walk my bike to the crest of 3 hills, but I made it and didn't actually die. Next time will be a bit easier, right? I gave away all my extra-large (extra-lovely) turtlenecks, since I KNOW I won't need them by the time the weather starts to cool.

Love,
Katy

To clarify what I just said, if you are wondering how on earth does someone who eats Godiva truffles and steaks and buttered veggies lose weight? It is simple: I either get or buy Godiva maybe twice a year and we might have steak once a month. The buttered veggies are certainly more often, but 2 cups is very filling (even one is) and allows me to eat less of the more highly caloric foods that might comprise my dinner.

One more trick that I am doing right now is that if I just want to chew, I chew on baby carrots. A few olives will also help if I have an urge to snack (especially if they are stuffed with feta cheese!).

hugs.
